Stocking a Plant-Based Kitchen - Costco

You defintely don't need to break the bank at fancy stores like Whole Foods to incorporate more whole plant foods into your diet. I buy the majority of our food at Costco.

Costco has a great assortment of nuts, seeds, grains, and canned goods with minimal additives, like beans, olives, and canned tomatoes. If you buy nuts, try to choose raw (preferred) or dry roasted (second best) varieties. If you purchase nuts in bulk like this, be sure to store them in the freezer.

Nuts, Seeds, and Canned Goods:

  • Cashews

  • Macadamia nuts

  • Brazil nuts (I eat 1 daily for the perfect dose of selenium.)

  • A mixed bag with almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, and pistachios

  • Hemp hearts (to replace oil in salad dressings)

  • Quinoa

  • Oats

  • Canned goods:

  • Black beans

  • Garbanzo beans

  • Olives (for topping salads)

Condiments:

I can find many of my favorite plant-based condiments Costco.

  • Maple syrup

  • Peanut butter

  • Cholula

  • Fruit preserves - I mix this with balsamic vinegar for a quick oil-free vinaigrette.

  • Artichoke hearts - I use this as a flavor booster on salads. I drain off the oil.

  • Nona Pia’s Balsamic Glaze

  • Mama Lil’s Peppers – This isn’t my favorite Kick Butt variety, but it is still delicious. I drain off the oil.

Refrigerated and Frozen Foods:

Costco sells a ton of frozen fruits and veggies. This was just a very small sampling of what they have. They also have great tofu. We buy it buy it 8 blocks at a time.

The acai is for the hub’s daily acai bowls.

Fresh Fruits and Veg:

This is just what we needed for the week. They obviously have a ton more to choose from. They also often seasonally carry unique fresh fruits, like rambutans, lychees, longans, and golden melons. Can you tell it’s mango season?

This is just to show you that you don’t have to go to the gourmet market to eat plant-strong. You can find great whole plant foods, as well as well as plant-based condiments to make them taste delicious, even at a big box store like Costco.

You’ve got this!
