How to Make a Great Hearty Salad

My ongoing goal is to eat at least one large and delicious salad each day. For many of you, the thought of eating a salad as your main course may be a sad and dreary idea. I am here to try to change your mind. When made thoughtfully, salads can be totally satisfying, filling, and scrumptious. Plus, as you’ve likely gathered by now, I am all about the health benefits, and there aren’t many vehicles better for serving up nutrition than a beautifully made salad.

If you’ve been following along for awhile, you’ll have my 6-step bowl formula down pat. In case you are new here, the basic salad formula is as follows:

  1. Add a whole-grain (brown rice, farro, soba noodles, quinoa, wheat berries, millet, etc.)

  2. Add some protein (tofu, edamame, beans of all varieties, tempeh, etc.)

  3. Add something leafy (leafy greens, cabbage, leafy herbs, etc.)

  4. Add in a ton of veg (and fresh fruits, as many different varieties as possible)

  5. Add a delicious nutrient-rich dressing

  6. Top with flavor and nutrition boosters (seeds, nuts, avocado, etc.)

You don’t have to worry if you are missing an element. For optimal nutrition, however, adding in all six elements will ensure that you are meeting all your nutritional needs.
